How you can save the NHS

If you could save lives by making one personal health choice, would you?

Wouldn’t it be great if we could turn back the clock, start our lives with conscious choices in the pursuit of long lasting health, and only visit our local GP when we’re struck with unpreventable illness.  When we really need those antibiotics. When the only cure is medicine.

Imagine a national health service that had the time and design to be preventative, rather than reactive. What if you’d been required to visit your GP for a health MOT once a year, every year, throughout your life. What would you have learnt about your body that would have helped you to combat illness before it struck? How would that have affected the way you treat your health on a daily basis? The way you educate your children?

It’s a idyllic utopian dream, isn’t it?

The latest report from the NHS says that despite a heavy focus on regaining financial control, hospitals are likely to end 2018 with an overspend of 1 billion.  The population is growing, and the NHS – from your local GP to the staff at major hospitals, is having to do more, with less funding behind it. There are fewer doctors, and the current workforce is stretched, under pressure, and at serious risk of burn-out.

At the same time, obesity is on the rise. Treatments for obesity related issues rose by 18% last year. There were 617 thousand admissions to NHS hospitals where obesity was a factor. In 2016/17 ‘1 in 5 children in Year 6 and 1 in 10 children in Reception were classified as obese’ according to NHS statistics. Obesity has become the second largest economic health burden to smoking.

The stats are overwhelming – but it’s a systemic issue. The problem with the dream, is that there’s a whole bundle of social and economic factors that contribute to poor health choices. It depends on the government, restaurants, retailers and manufacturers to make a change to education, access, marketing. It calls for smart public health initiatives. It means pulling up the root and replanting with regular targeted attention to real nourishment.

But what if you could make a personal choice today to be an active part of that change?

You can make the first step yourself by joining a programme that puts you in the driving seat of your own health.

If I asked you now “What is the key to a healthier life”, you’d have the basic answer. We all know, inherently, that eating well and being active keeps us healthy. But it’s not that black and white. If we all know that, why aren’t we all doing it?

Because change is about mindset and access to the right information for you. And that goes for all of us, no matter where we are on our health journey. Lack of the right mindset is what spirals us out of control of our health goals. Lack of access to the right information for our own needs is what sends us to crash diets and misinformed fitness regimes.

This is exactly the reason I set up the ‘Take Control’ programme. I get asked questions all the time about the ‘right thing to do’. Carbs or no carbs? Weight lifting or cardio? What about home workouts? How do I lose weight if I can’t get to a gym? In our digital world, it looks like we’re armed with an arsenal of information. But did you know that too many options actually makes it harder for us to make choice? It’s like going to a restaurant with a huge menu. We’re so afraid we’ll pick the wrong thing and get food envy (and no one wants food envy).

So I’ve made it simple. It’s just one choice
